Random Wax: 2019 Contenders Football

 2019 Contenders:  Patrick Mahomes needs no introduction.  The best quarterback in the NFL today, his accolades will go down in history when he's compared to the best ever to play the position.  He's a Texas Tech alum and I've always been a fan.

I'm a big fan of Luke Kuechly.  He was just such a good smart linebacker in the league.  Mike Evans is still a top receiver in the league and 2025 will be his 12th season in the NFL.  I really like this set and this base design in particular.

Rookie of the Year Contenders have a nice look to them as do the Legendary Contenders that give us retired greats.  The Legendary Contenders is an insert I really like.

The backs are really nice sans having no stats of course.  And wow it seems so long since Goff was a Ram.

Fun pack of cards that I purchased in 2023.  I rarely complain about Contenders.  We'll end it with a Winning Ticket A-A-Ron.

2019 Contenders Football: I've had this one queued up for a while now.  It's a favorite design of mine and I'm a Contenders fan as a whole.  It'll be interesting to see what the Saints look like in the post Brees era.  Always tough seeing one of the greats of the game move on especially for his former team.

Plenty of great receivers here though who in 2019 could have thought Hopkins would now be a Cardinal and the Houston franchise would be in such disarray?  As a reminder the Section/Row/Seat correlate to the player's Weight/Height(FtIn)/Jersey number.

Also it's doubtful anyone would have picked the Bucs to win a Super Bowl within two years.  With Tom Brady at quarterback no less.

This design just pops for me.  I know folks get tired of the ticket format it uses each year but this one with the the big circle around the logo is a winner for me.  

Definitely some good inserts.  The cards tend to have a lot of white on them so I prefer the colored jerseys best.  Hardman Jr. is doing alright with the Chiefs having caught 41 passes last year.  Another fun pack.

 2019 Contenders Football: I love this set and I've had this post sitting for a while.  Love the design and the small set means you'll see plenty of stars most of the time.

Who doesn't love Derrick Henry and his throwback smash mouth running of the football?  Aaron Donald is a beast and looks great in that classic Rams uni.

A couple of big time receivers here.  Julio and the Atlanta offense have to get it figured out.  And he needs to stay healthy.  Who will be throwing the ball to Michael Thomas in 2021?

Both of these guys were starters for Buffalo this year.  Each had solid years.  Hopefully they can be even better next season and Buffalo can compete once again for the AFC Title.  Fun pack and great cards.

2019 Contenders Football: Here's a pack I've had running around for a while but seems perfect for today.  Not often do you get doubles in a pack but when you do you hope it can be this guy.  Reigning Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes is a stud and a favorite of mine so I couldn't ask for any more.

I'm a big Luke Kuechly guy too.  Bummer to see him go but so happy he went out on his own terms.  Can't wait to see what Todd Gurley can do in Atlanta this year.  Love him as a player and I know he isn't going to give them 1200 yards but I still think he can be a solid running back at age 26.

Many of these guys will be keys to their teams success this year and plenty of story lines across the league. Can Buffalo win the AFC East?  How will AJ Green do with with the expected rookie of the year at QB?  Will the Packers make a serious run at the Super Bowl?  Only to name a few.

This was a really fun pack with the inclusion of duplicate Mahomes cards and we also get to see all-time great Peyton Manning among the other many stars.  I'm big on the Contenders brand and this pack does it proud.  Great to have football back tonight.  Enjoy the season!

 2019 Contenders Football:  Another pack of this set which I like.  I still see packs of these available in stores.  I like seeing retired greats in these sets.  While Aikman was not nice to my Bills in their two Super Bowl match ups he is still a good place to start with this pack.  

 I think this is one of the Contender brand's better designs.  As a reminder the Section/Row/Seat are the players weight/height/jersey number.

 I like the designs on both of these inserts.

 Murphy started 16 games for the Cards last year while Isabella had only 9 receptions in 15 games.  A fun little pack with good pull.

2019 Contenders Football

2019 Contenders Football:  I always look forward to these cards.  I know some get bored with the similar design over and over but I really like this years effort.  It's something about that circle with the team name and logo.  So simple but I really like it.  Christian McCaffrey is so good and deserves to lead this post off .

Contenders sets have a small base set size so the packs are usually pretty star packed.  This one is no different.

You won't find a ton of inserts but there were four in this pack.  I really like the inclusion of retired greats but wish we'd see them as part of the base set.  The Rookie of the Year card is simple but I like the design.  

The backs are very good though the lack of stats is always annoying.  Seems like they could throw some in there somewhere.  A duplicate of the front photo with the the photo's background added is nice.  Again we see the circle I like so much.

The numbers on the front of the card represent weight (section), height (row) and uniform number (seat).  Again I'm liking this design.  I know it is pretty simplistic but it works for me.

Another of the inserts.  It is a simple way to get a team's draft picks on cardboard.  I like it.  There will definitely be more of these packs in my future.
