This is more about the Kansas City Royals than say the World Series itself but do let me touch on the games for just a moment. The San Francisco Giants, and more specifically, Madison Bumgarner bested the Royals this series. While the team's ERA's aren't that much different (SF 3.98/KC 4.28) the hitting for the Royals was just not there. The Royals' .249 batting average and .291 on base percentage led to their demise. With their speed a few guys on base here and there could have made a huge difference in the series two close games. But it was not to be. Bumgarner pitched 21 of San Francisco's 61 innings and had a 0.43 ERA, 2 wins, 1 save, 1 complete game and only walked one while fanning 17. Outstanding World Series for him and the Giants deserved to win.
I feel for the Royals and their fans. I was rooting right along with them. They are in my top five of MLB teams and I love the underdogs. And who is a bigger underdog than K.C.? Ok, maybe the Cubbies. Still it was hard. They are a lovable team who was just fun with their brand of running and youthful exuberance. I was rooting hard knowing that anything less that the title would hit the team and the fans hard. I do hope that at some point soon they can all reflect on it for what it really was which was an amazing run, grab all the American League Champions gear and swag they can and be happy for what they accomplished. It truly was magical. Eight and 0 going into the World Series, sweeping the Tigers and Angels on their run to the American League Championship. No one, no one saw that coming. I know it won't be long before the Royals see the playoffs again. Still as a small market team I do know that they'll have to make financial decisions on players which will make it tough to sustain the momentum. Right now though it should all be about October and the fun the Royals brought to Kansas City.

What happened to the Atlanta Braves This Year - a Look at The 2014 Season
The Bravos finished 17 games back of the Washington Nationals with a 79-83 record and didn't make the playoffs. This and the fact the team hasn't won a postseason series since 2001 cost general manager Frank Wren his job. The Braves had problems in different areas but the lack of scoring has to be the biggest weakness this team has. Only the Padres scored less runs than Atlanta. The offense was just anemic. Whoever is hired to replace Wren has to help figure that out.
Wren's best move of the year might have been cutting ties with Dan Uggla though the Erwin Santana pickup was a big boost to the starting staff. Though Santana's signing came at the cost of a first round pick so I'm not sure how much of a win that is in such a down year. I wish Atlanta would do the same with B.J. Upton. He is horrible and getting worse but there were other holes in the lineup too. Andrelton Simmons has massive skills on defense but he regressed at the plate. Atlanta has to find someone who can help Simmons and Upton improve at the plate. The pitching also had issues as it took big hits before the season when Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy were sidelined with Tommy John surgery. Mike Minor also missed time with shoulder surgery and wasn't the same after his return.
All wasn't bad though. Evan Gattis, Craig Kimbrel, Justin Upton, Julio Teheran and Aaron Harang all had good years. The bullpen is in good shape so hopefully the offseason can concentrate on getting the offense right. This isn't the first year the Braves have had issues with the offense. At some point it has to get better. Right? Still it was a lost year that looked promising early but a late season collapse doomed the team. Here's hoping Atlanta can find some offense somewhere this offseason whether that is through free agency, the minors or within the lineup itself.

League Championship Series Matchups
I've been out of town for almost two weeks and saw only 9 innings worth of the baseball playoffs. Luckily it was the first 9 innings of the thrilling Kansas City - Oakland wildcard game. And what a start to the playoffs it was. I didn't expect either of the upcoming championship series matchups but here I go:
Royals - Orioles - Let's get this out of the way - I'm all in on the Royals' bandwagon. Hopefully they can pull off the miracle and get to the world series. It was one thing to beat Oakland in a one game series but they swept who I thought was the best team in the majors - the Angels. How the heck did that happen? I didn't get to see the games and the recaps and boxscores don't do it justice. This was a huge upset. Now how good are they and can they keep it going? I think they are good enough to win against Baltimore. The talent is there. Still they'll need to play at the top of their game every game for any chance at advancing to the World Series. Again I love this team and want to see them win but no matter how good they've played to this point it is hard to see them getting past a superior Orioles team. Of course I would have said that a week ago prior to the Angels series had I had a chance to post my thoughts... Still I'd love to see them in the World Series and even better to see them kick the Cardinals butt in a rematch of their last playoff/World Series appearance in 1985.
Baltimore has flown under the radar most of the year. About the only thing their offense didn't excel at was anything involving speed. Their power numbers were near the top while also being 5th in the AL in average. The pitching was 3rd in the AL in ERA though their starters (Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris, Ubaldo Jimenez, Kevin Gausman) probably don't strike fear in most fans when they hear their names. Still they and their bullpen helped this team win 96 games while no one outside Baltimore paid attention. They have a good offense that can win with the long ball. I think this is the better team. Kansas City should give them a good series assuming they don't wake up and remember they are the Royals. I think Baltimore wins in 6 games and think it would be a great story considering the Orioles haven't been to the Series since defeating the Phillies in the '83 Fall Classic.
Giants-Cardinals - I really thought we'd see the Nationals in the championship series. That said the Giants are a good team and have experience plus two of the last four World Series championships. Good starting pitching here led by Madison Bumgarner and I can't wait to see the game 1 matchup versus Adam Wainwright. I'm not sure I can quantify how but I think the Giants are the better team. Look at the records of their starters and two have losing records. Go figure. Jake Peavy has been a great pickup as a starter and their bullpen has been very good sans some bumps in the road at closer. Buster Posey, Hunter Pence and Joe Panik lead a good offense that doesn't have a 30 homerun guy but many in the lineup can hit a homer at anytime. I like the balance here on offense and in their pitching but I see a hard fought series that goes 7 games. Bruce Bochy is one of the best managers going and I think that will help the Giants win this tough series.
Living near St. Louis, and not being a Cardinals fan, I have Cardinals fatigue. It is fun needling my buddies when the Cards struggle but that hasn't been much this year. From about the mid point of the season St. Louis hit it's stride and look as good as anyone coming out of the National League. Not a star studded offense and a relatively young starting staff this team is easily overlooked. Still Wainwright and John Lackey help steady this staff along with stud catcher Yadier Molina. The offense struggled mightily at one point this year but caught their second wind and while not sexy are scrappy, if not productive. Mike Matheny is young and is questioned often here locally but this is his third straight championship series so he is doing something right. Again I like the Giants here but St. Louis has home field advantage and should push them to the limit. Should be a great series no matter how it comes out.

2014 MLB Post Season - The Wild Card Round
AMERICAN LEAGUE: I don't have much time but wanted to touch base on this if even for a quick minute before the wild card games start. First my teams didn't make it but I'll touch on those topics in another post. Second I couldn't be happier for the Kansas City Royals. I've always watched them from afar and, like Pittsburgh, have wanted them to be relevant again. Hosting the Oakland A's in tonight's wild card game is a good start. This is a good team. Not one I'd expect to do much damage in the playoffs past this game but I would still like to see them get a shot at the Angels and have at least one additional playoff game in KC. Oakland is also a team I like to see do well. Maybe it is the small market thing. Actually I know it is. Still they've had their shot winning their division the last two years only to fall in the first round. I would definitely root for them if they make it past Kansas City but I'd like to see the Royals move on. That said I think Oakland wins tonight in a close game. I like Lester in the playoffs and think that gives Oakland the edge. Still Kansas City should give them a game of it and a play here or there and they'll be headed to Los Angeles for the next round.
NATIONAL LEAGUE: Pittsburgh is another team with a soft spot in my heart. They are also playing well right now and I think they'll beat San Francisco at home tomorrow night. This should be another close game but if either wild card game becomes a blowout this would probably be it. I like the Giants' pitching staff better overall but Pittsburgh has Edison Volquez going and he gives them as good a chance to win as anyone. Either team will be lucky to make it a series in the next round against Washington but you never know. You just need to get there and hope you catch a few breaks. Again, I think Pittsburgh wins this one in a close game.

Atlanta Braves Still Struggle with Offense
Some things just never seem to change. Again I have to talk about the offensive woes? The Atlanta Braves are having a good year at 54 and 45 but they are 1 game out of first behind Washington and have plenty of company vying for the wild card. One thing that still gets me is that the Braves signed B.J. Upton two years ago when they could have resigned Michael Bourn for virtually the same price (Bourn is actually cheaper). Yes they did it to help entice Justin Upton but the Braves have paid for that move. All he seems good for is 150 strikeouts a year and the .197 average, .271 on base, and .311 slugging in 219 games. And it isn't like he was all that great when played for Tampa Bay. Enough whining about that.
Atlanta does have some players who are having very good years to include Justin Upton, Freddie Freeman, Evan Gattis and new second baseman Tommy LaStella. Center field would be my priority to upgade the offense if they can make a move before the trading deadline. I'd love to see a speedy guy who you can put at the top of the order that gets on base all the time. Not a lot of those guys out there and as good as he's been in the leadoff spot I'd like to see Jason Heyward farther down in the order. A third baseman with some power would also be a plus but other than Adrian Beltre I don't know if anyone fits that requirement. I was glad to see Atlanta finally drop Dan Uggla. Great guy who gave us one very good year but it was time for him to go. I have to hope the offense can come around the second part of the season. Maybe LaStella and the return of Gattis from injury can spark this offense. It is just frustrating when you have such good hitters and some having very good years and the offense still doesn't produce. Here are some of Braves' major league rankings so far this year:
Runs - 27th
Homeruns - 17th
Average - 24th
OPS - 25th
Braves' pitching is sixth in the majors in ERA and is doing well. Considering the injuries the pitching staff has endured and mist be considered a huge win for Atlanta. I wouldn't complain if the Braves grabbed one more arm for the bullpen but that just seems like I'm being greedy.
Atlanta can still win their division and/or compete for a wild card. I truly believe this offense is better than what we've seen. Hopefully something will get it going. If it does there is no ceiling for this team in the National League. I don't think a World Series birth is out of reach. First they must reach the playoffs and find that inner consistent offense.

Boston Red Sox 2014 Preview

Koji Uehara
The starters trot out Jon Lester, John Lackey,
Jake Peavy, Clay Bucholz, and Felix Doubront. I'd take this starting lineup any day and think it stacks up well against any of those out there. I think health would be the biggest thing this group will battle. None will win the Cy Young but you'll get solid numbers which should be good enough to have them in playoff contention.
The bullpen is solid and was also big plus last year especially once Koji Uehara took over as closer. The pen looks good again this year and they have added former Cardinal Edward Mujica, former Dodger Chris Capuano and former Brewer Burke Badenhop to the fray. Gives them more options as they go through the season. They also have Junichi Tazawa and Brandon Workman returning from last year's team. Not a ton of sexy names but the bullpen should be solid.
The offense also looks good:

Mike Napoli
1B - Mike Napoli - Should put up good homerun and ribbie totals but his average will probably be just that, average, while striking out a lot.
2B - Dustin Pedroia is always a solid hitter and defender and after Big Papi is the heart of this team.
3B - Will Middlebrooks - Looks like he is the guy long term though Jonathan Herrera is getting some time there now. Either way I don't look for a ton of offense here but hopefully either can be a guy who is solid on D and can hit .270 - .290 with a little pop.
SS - Xander Bogaerts is good defensively and folks think his offense will be there in the end. Hopefully that is true. He has a big upside and I'd like to see him pan out.
LF - Jonny Gomes will strikeout a lot and be so so in the average department while having some pop. I'm not real excited about him but he came up big in the World Series last year and I'm hoping some of that will carry over to this year.
RF - Daniel Nava - Last year was a breakout year for him. If he can come anywhere close to the numbers he put up last year (.303/.385) over 536 at bats, Boston is good in right field.
CF - Grady Sizemore surprised everyone to take the starting job in center. Everyone wants Jackie Bradley to be the guy in center but Sizemore deserves the spot right now. I do think if he falters Bradley will get plenty of at bats. I'm rooting for Sizemore to have a great comeback year. He is a guy who has had some very good years in seasons past. And if he does this year, Bradley will still get his at bats somewhere.
DH - David Ortiz makes it all good. He just received a one year extension on his contract. He is what makes it all hum. He has been nothing short of "The Guy" for this franchise for over a decade. Glad to see him and the team could come together and make the extension happen. As long as he stays healthy there is no reason to think he won't have another very very good season.
Last year this team came out of nowhere. That won't happen this year. All the teams in the AL East are good enough to chip away at the wins total for Boston. Still Boston should be right there in the running for the East title come October. Boston won 97 games last year. This year I think 90 is doable. Not 100% sure they'll win the East but I'll make that prediction. I think it would be tough to say they will win the Series again. So tough to defend the title and I really like what Texas did this year. Still it should be a very good year for the Red Sox. I look forward to seeing what some of the players can do and hopefully improve on what they did last year.
Atlanta Braves 2014 Preview

Julio Teheran
My big concern coming into the season is starting pitching. Atlanta has so far started Julio Teheran (staff ace?), Alex Wood, Aaron Harang, David Hale, and Ervin Santana. Wood, Harang, and Hale won a total of four games last year while Teheran and Santana combined for 23. This doesn't give me a ton of confidence. Starters Brandon Beachy and Kris Medlen are lost for the season due to injury but Mike Minor may make it back by the end of April. That is a lot to deal with for any staff. Still the starters have so far done well in the short season winning five games and no starter has an ERA over 2.89. I still think over the long haul the staff will be a concern but I'm happy with their production so far. They can't keep it up but at least the pressure hasn't got to them yet.
The bullpen, the staff's big strength, has struggled so far though Craig Kimbrel and Luis Avilan have started off strong. Atlanta will definitely need the relievers to have a good year. I think the injuries to the starters will put a strain on the bullpen so these guys need to step up. Johnny Venters is still on the DL and I'm not sure of his return.

Justin Upton - .366/.435/.635 3 HR 6 RBI Thru 11 Gms (2014)
3B Chris Johnson filled a big need at third as a throw in in the Upton trade. He killed it by hitting .321 and stabilizing a position where there wasn't a clear cut answer after the retirement of Chipper Jones. C Evan Gattis takes over catching duties full time this year. He has to get his numbers up from last year (.243/.291/.480) and cut down on strikeouts. He looks like a guy who could hit 30 homers each year but might also strike out 175 times. He will also have to show that he can handle the staff while behind the plate. 2B Dan Uggla is the same guy in terms of batting - all or nothing. I'm actually surprised he is starting this year. I keep thinking Atlanta will just move on as he doesn't even give you great defense. Don't get me wrong. I really like Uggla and loved the move when Atlanta traded for him. But of late he has played horribly and it is time to move on. The lack of great options, and his contract, though keep him in the lineup. I love Andrelton Simmons at shortstop. He may not hit for anything but he is a stud defensive players who makes this team better with his glove. I'm willing to give up offense for superb defense at the shortstop position. Unless CF BJ Upton somehow improves the Braves must also move on. I'd prefer Jordan Schafer in CF. More of a contact batting guy who won't strikeout 150 times (in theory) and he can also play solid defense.
There are definitely some issues with the pitching staff and lineup but this team can compete in the National League East. Washington will be right there throughout the year making it tough. While the offense (4th in NL Runs) and pitching (1st in NL runs allowed) were both good last year they each have their challenges this year. To me the biggest will be the starting lineup and the bats of Gattis, BJ Upton, and Uggla. Hopefully manager Fredi Gonzalez will make the right moves when he needs to to help both the offense and defense. I'm thinking this team will win something closer to 88 games and it would be a stretch to say they'll get to the 96 they won last year. It is early so there is always hope. I want to give props to Braves' management. They gave long term deals or extensions to Freeman, Howard, and Teheran. Nice to see them locking up key pieces to this team even though they don't make the money some of the bigger market teams do. I'll check back in later this year and see how some of this has played out.

Major League Baseball Enacts New Rules
MLB has enacted expanded instant replay reviews, the no collisions at home-plate rule, and tried to make things safer for pitchers. All for getting it right so I love the use of extended replay...and hate it. This is tough. Baseball games already last around three hours. Having to sit through replay reviews seems like a tough pill to swallow. Where as most folks watch one to two NFL games a week, MLB teams play 5-6 times a week. While the game itself is fine the speed is something that can be a pain. I like many can get distracted very easily. I know this isn't everyone but it something all sports have been fighting for years now. If viewers aren't engaged they can just as easily flip the channel, pick up their laptop, play on their phone or go to whatever other device that can catch their attention. I'm not saying I won't like this. If done right and these calls dwon't drag on too long and this will be a great thing for the sport. I honestly think umpires will appreciate it as well. This will reduce the amount of bad calls left out on the field. Again I'll have a wait and see attitude for now while hoping they can work out any kinks quickly and instant replay will settle into the background as just another part of the game.
The home-plate collision rule is a tough one. We all love the play. There is little more exciting. That said it has always confused me. Catchers can't block the plate without the ball, but do, and players just can't steam roll defenders, but do. Always was something that had me scratching my head. I think they've done about as good a job as possible of putting something in place to help minimize the injuries in plays at home-plate. But though I never want anyone to get hurt I will miss those massive collisions at home.
There were also some restrictions lifted on the protective headgear that pitchers can wear. Some have already been in place but not surprisingly pitchers prefer comfort over safety. I get it. I've never had balls whizzing around my head at 100 miles per hour but playing sports in general I've always chosen comfort over anything else. I think this will boil down to someone coming up with something that will not only be comfortable but safe. Doesn't look like it is out there yet but someday a company will figure it out.

Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout Get Big Deals
Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout both signed big deals this week. They are both in the upper echelon of players in baseball today but are at different points in their career and were paid much differently. Cabrera got a 10 year $292 million dollar deal while Mike Trout signed a six-year $144.5 million dollar deal. Cabrera is 30 years-old while Trout is a 22 year-old.
Cabrera is by almost any standard the best hitter in baseball and has been for some time. This doesn't mean his contract hasn't made some shake their head. He will be 40 when the contract ends and the contract is drawing comparisons to the deal Albert Pujols received from the Angels at age 31. Puljols had an off year his first year with the Angels and was then only able to play 99 games last year due to injury while batting a career low .258. No matter what the comparisons may be these are two different players. While Pujols had been a relatively healthy player it was known he had some health issues specifically some feet problems when he left St. Louis. Cabrera has also been healthy but doesn't seem to have any issues right now that makes me particularly worried about his health. My thought is that this is a good deal. He was two years away from free agency but locking him up now takes away all that drama. In two years he might have commanded more than $30 million a year and maybe they lose him to another team. Even as good as he is I doubt this deal looks good past year five - at best. But there is no reason to believe he can't be productive even after that. The rest of the money is just to ensure he is a Tiger for the remainder of his career. Maybe his numbers dip with Prince Fielder no longer behind him in the lineup but he was a stud long before Fielder came along. I like the move and hope it works out for both sides.
Mike Trout has been a great young player who has lived up to the hype. The Angels are as much paying him for his future production as they are what he has done the last three years when he made the minimum each year. This also sets both parties up for the future when his contract runs out. Trout will be in his prime when the contract ends and assuming he is playing well will be ready for a huge payday. He'll be 29 and will be able to get a long term monster deal that will set him up for life. Again I'm assuming he continues to put up good numbers. The Angels if they want, and can afford to pay him at that time have the franchise player locked up for what may be the rest of his career. If they don't want to keep him at that time they can walk away. Trout is truly one of the most dynamic players we've seen in a long time. This deal seems very fair to both sides and ensure the Angels have one of the game's current studs locked up for at least six years.
Atlanta Braves Give New Contracts to Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward
The Atlanta Braves avoided arbitration with first baseman Freddie Freeman and outfielder Jason Heyward by agreeing to extended contracts. Report have Freeman receiving $135 million over eight years while Heyward will get $13 million for two years. I really like both moves for Atlanta. Both are great young talents and not having to worry about contracts for either in the immediate future is nothing but good news for the Braves.
Freeman has been as good as advertised at first base. In three years he has averaged .285/.358/.466 while hitting 20 plus homeruns each year while topping 100 RBI's for the first time last year. Freeman was also 10th in the majors in WAR last year while also second in batting with runners in scoring position. Freeman has shown he is worth the approximately $16 million a year he'll be getting. I think it is important to lock up young players who have shown they can play good ball consistently. Assuming Freeman's numbers don't fall off dramatically I think Atlanta will be happy at the end of this contract. He is 24 years-old so his best days should be ahead of him.
Heyward has had a little different story in the majors having to fight through injuries to include missing 58 games last year. His career averages are .259/.352/.443. He has 73 homeruns over his first four seasons. This two year deal gives both sides time to better assess what Heyward will be in his career. If he can stay healthy and put up big numbers the next two years it will pay off with a big contract. To that end I would have been comfortable with Atlanta locking him up for more years but this probably makes sense for both sides. He is only 24 so no one probably knows quite yet who Jason Heyward the player really is. After returning from injury last year he was put in the leadoff role and did well. Hopefully that bodes well for his future.
