Random Wax: 2016 Donruss Pack

 2016 Donruss Baseball:  Yaz!  This is one of two free packs of cards from a Steel City Collectibles purchase last year.  Finally getting around to posting.  There were only six cards in the pack but anytime I can get #2 all-time favorite Yaz I'm a happy man.

 Pretty good pull also getting a Harper and Posey in the deal.  The designs on this set is simple but I like it. 

The set has some nice inserts as well.  I like all three of these.  That '82 design isn't a favorite of mine but seeing current players on it helps.  Fun little pack and the fact it was free is great.  I thought i did well.

2016 Donruss Baseball Retail Lot of 24 Packs

I've had this lot of 24 retail packs of the 2016 Donruss baseball for some time now.  It has taken some time for this set to grow on me, mostly due to my initial feelings of not having the MLB license, but it has.  I picked up the packs as part of a Dave & Adam's purchase.  Being retail there is no guarantee of an auto but I was still game for the price of $14.95 for 208 cards.  While I didn't grab an auto I did get some numbered cards and just enjoyed busting a bunch of wax.  This Molina card is definitely one of my favorites.  I tend to think Topps does a better overall job on the photos for their cards but there are still some nice photos here though they are definitely lean onfielding pics.  

I love retired legends and Yaz is my all-time favorite Red Sox player so this was a fun pull.  Rickey is also an all-time favorite.  

I nabbed two numbered cards - a Test Proof Cyan #/49 and a career stat line #/463.  Really though that test proof card does nothing for me.  There were also a couple of pink border parallels.  They didn't look bad.  I was leery at first but seeing them in hand won me over.    

   

These Diamond Kings aren't the Kings of old but I've seen worse (see 2018 Donruss).  Would have liked a bit more color on these cards.  The Power Alley cards are pretty sweet and this was my first look at the USA Baseball cards which are nice.  

The retired greats are a bit draw for me.  The retro '82 design is fun.  Overall these are nice cards and finding a good deal was an easy way to grab a bunch of these cards.  I love opportunities like that even if my wallet isn't always on board.

2016 Donruss Baseball Cards

Grabbed the 2016 Donruss baseball cards put out by Panini.  This is a fun set and I pulled quite a few stars.  The fronts are similar to the Donruss football and basketball sets.  I like the basic design of the fronts though the lack MLB logos and airbrushing to remove team names and logos is always a downer since Panini doesn't have an MLB license.  The 1982 throwback design is nice.  I do like that look.

The backs are plain with a mostly two color design.  The player's last year of stats and career stats are sandwiched by the player's information on top and a write-up on the bottom.  Does the job but doesn't really excite me too much.  

Plenty of inserts and subsets to look at but I didn't receive any of the retired players which is always favorite cards of mine.  Still there was the mascot card which was a big score by pulling the San Diego Chicken who is my favorite.  I also pulled three different rookie offerings, a Studio card, Masters of the Game Randy Johnson, and Chris Sale Diamond King.  Would have liked to see more color on the Diamond Kings card but I'm sure they are just trying something different.  Overall it is a good set but for me it isn't a great set.  I'll look for the players from the past and Diamond Kings cards but the base cards just don't excite me that much considering there isn't a MLB license in place.
