Random Wax: 1990 Upper Deck Baseball

1990 UD:  Will Clark was a great hitter averaging .303 for his 15-year career.  He also batted .333 in 31 games with San Francisco, Texas and St. Louis.  Clark's first hit, in his first at bat, was a home run off Nolan Ryan in 1986.

Willie McGee, a switch hitter, had more hits than Clark in his 18-year career while hitting .295 in his career.  He also won an MVP and 2X batting titles.  Like many I've always been a fan of this set.

In 1991, Clark would set a career high in runs batted in with 116 and would lead the league with a .536 slugging percentage.

The backs really are nice even if we don't get career stats.

1985 was Willie McGee's MVP season.

I'm a big Robin Yount fan and I'm a big Upper Deck Checklist card fan with that art.  Yount was a 2X MVP who had 3,142 hits in his 20-year career.

Random Wax: 1990 Upper Deck Baseball

1990 UD:   Joe Carter had a smile on his face much of the time.  This is a really good photo of him.  A 5X All-Star and 2X Silver Slugger he went on to win two World Series championships with the Toronto Blue Jays.  One on his famous walk off home run.  That Toronto lineup really was stacked.

Just an amazing set from Upper Deck.  My first time buying any since 2018.  In 1990, Greg Maddux would lead the league in hits allowed.  He still won 15 games and had a 3.46 ERA while winning a Golden Glove award and is showing off his skills here.

The backs are really nice.  Colorful with a new photo.  Not all of a player's career stats but enough to be forgiven for the error.  Carter of cours had power but also had some wheels early in his career.

These team holograms were maybe 1/3 the size of a regular card.  Pretty cool looking and they scan great.

Some nice photos to end it as well as a Team Checklist.  I love the art on those across the Upper Deck sets.

1990 Upper Deck Baseball Low Series Hobby Box

I picked up this box of 1990 Upper Deck baseball at the card show this month.  At $5 it is a no brainer.  Junk wax?  This set definitely won't make you any money but still this was part of those first sets from Upper Deck that blew us all away at the time.  This was Ken Griffey Jr.'s second Upper Deck card and he was the buzz of the card collecting community.  The box had a total of 540 cards so I more than got my money's worth.  It is fun opening all those packs and reliving the memories.  The photos on the back are always a nice bonus.  Sometimes you do have to wonder why a nice action photo on the back wasn't used in place of a head shot that was actually used there.  My scanner didn't always like the white borders but it didn't take away from how nice these cards look.    

A staple of Upper Deck for a time was the team checklists which contained art of one of the team's stars.  I love these cards across all the Upper Deck brands.  I didn't pull a complete set of these but I was close.

Three of my favorite cards from my pull.  The Gary Carter is a simple photo but I really like this card.  

These are some of my all-time favorite players.  That doesn't always mean they are the best photos - I'm sure Bob Walk would like a do over on this one.  Look at that hair Dave Stieb is sporting.  Nice. The Dennis Eckersley card really stands out with a great action photo.

Some of the league's stars are represented here.  The Kirby photo is a great shot of him smiling.  I thought it was funny that the photo they chose of Mark McGwire was of him running not that it isn't a good photo.  Barry Bonds looks all not happy which is about what you'd expect.
