Random Wax: 1991 Fleer Baseball (4 Packs)

1991 Fleer:  The All-Star game is tonight and Dave Winfield knows a thing or two about the All-Star game being named to 12 Midsummer Classics in a row (77-88).  Drafted by the NBA/ABA, MLB and NFL he batted .283, with 3,110 hits and 465 home runs over 22 seasons.  He won a championship with the 1992 Blue Jays and was also a 7X Gold Glover and 6X Silver Slugger while also winning the Clemente award once.  

Greg Maddux threw 13 complete game shutouts while pitching less than 100 pitches.  He as an 8X All-Star.

Some A's love including Hall of Famers Harold Baines and Dennis Eckersley who were both 6X All-Stars. Willie was pretty good himself with 4X All-Star games.

We love the stickers and the stats on the back.  Great job Fleer.  I like how MLB does Legend picks for the All-Star game now.  This year it is Justin Verlander.

Kirk Gibson was never an All-Star but had plenty of highlight moments in his career, including helping the Dodgers beat the A's in the World Series with a home run off Eck that is one of the best World Series moments ever.

The backs have that muted look to them, but we forgive them because of the great stats we get.  Wade Boggs was a 12X All-Star.

Dwight Gooden made 4 All-Star teams.  Always fun cards.

1986 Fleer Baseball

1986 Fleer:  Sweet Lou was Rookie of the Year, a 5X All-Star, 4X Silver Slugger and 3X Gold Glove selectee.  He won a Championship with the 1984 Detroit Tigers.  He played his entire 19-year career in Detroit and turned 1,527 double plays with shortstop Alan Trammel, an MLB record that will probably never be broken.

This design is one I've always liked for some reason.  Very simple but works for me though more action shots would have been appreciated.  Bill Madlock won 4 batting titles, 2 with the Cubs and 2 with the Pirates, and won a championship with the 1979 Pirates.  Cecil Cooper was a career .298 hitter and Jerry Royster is one of the random favorite all-time players of mine.

The backs have tons of stats which is great.  Not the most visually appealing but I'll take stats any day.  The back of the sticker is solid with fun famous feats.  

Greg Gross hit .287 and had a .387 on base percentage over 3,745 at bats but only hit 7 dingers.  Five of those in one season.  Power was definitely not his thing.

Ron Washington with the great look rocking the hair and Twins uni.  John Franco was a 4X All-Star and twice the Rolaids Relief pitcher of the year.  Fun pack of cards and we'll end it with the always fun sticker.

Random Wax: 1988 Fleer Baseball (3 Packs)

 1988 Fleer: Bo Jackson's career was short, but it was still amazing.  His athleticism, his arm, his speed, his power, his fun.  He was an all-time great even when stats won't back that up.

Wally Joyner was a 1X All-Star and 1X Home Run Derby champion.  His best season came with the Padres when he hit .327 for them in 1997.  He ended his career hitting .289 with a .362 OBP and just over 2,000 hits.  

Doyle Alexander pitched for 19 seasons winning 194 games while notching a 3.76 ERA.  Three times he had 17 wins in season and in 1989, his final year in the league, he had 18 losses with a 4.44 ERA.

Chris Gwynn hit .300 one year for the Royals in 306 plate appearances.  He had a total of 263 hits across 10 seasons.

The stickers were great.  'Nuff said.

And they came with great information on the back.

These are the last three packs from the box I purchased late in 2021.  I'm a fan of this set and showing off the cards has been so much fun.  We'll end it with Dave Stewart who is a PC guy of mine.  He has the look of a guy who just knows.  What he knows, I'm not sure of, but still.  3X World Champion and a World Series MVP right there.

Random Wax: 1991 Fleer Baseball (4 Packs)

 1991 Fleer: Rickey needs no introduction.  He led the league in steals 12 times including at age 39 when he swiped 66 with the '98 A's.  He's the all-time record holder for steals and runs scored.

More greats from the era.  Gary Carter played one season in San Francisco.  Carter led the league in RBIs with 106 in 1984. 

Love the stickers!  On the backs we got the all-time leaders for a team which is amazing.

Brian Harper hit .295 for his 16-year career and won a championship with the 1991 Twins.

These three could hit.

Lots to like on the backs.  The one thing I could never understand was the muted or dulled color.

Dave Parker, 2X hitting champ, MVP, 7X All-Star, 2X World Series Champion, and Hall of Famer batted .290 for his 19-year career.

We'll end it with a nice Pro Visions Black.  I like the art.

1988 Fleer:  Wade Boggs was a great hitter winning 5 batting titles ending his career with just over 3,000 hits and a .310 batting average.  He had a crazy stretch early in his career where he hit .357 or better 4 out of 5 seasons.

Oh the power in these three greats of the game!  We know McGwire and Bonds won't make the Hall of Fame but the Crime Dog did.  He finished his career with a .284 batting average, 493 home runs, and 2,490 hits.  He twice led the league in homers and once in OPS.

The backs of the stickers were informative for fans who didn't have the internet at their disposal 27 years ago.

More big names from the era.  Benito Santiago was a 5X All-Star, 3X All-Star, 4X Silver Slugger, and a NLCS MVP.

Teddy Higuera didn't start his MLB career until he was 27, but was 94-64 with a 3.61 ERA before injuries ended his career.  Fun cards and memories as always.

 '91 Fleer: These guys back in the day were amazing and to get them on one card is a win.  This is a SuperStar Special card for the set.

Am I a big fan of this set.  Why?  No idea but I dig it.  Wally Joyner, home run champion...who knew?

Love the stickers.  I get a nice big BoSox sticker pull here.  And the backs were amazing all-time stats leaders for the teams.  Perfect.

Loved the speed of Vince Coleman.

The backs are good even if the color has been "dulled".  Never quite figured that out.  But still, tons of stats to enjoy.

Steve Avery made his debut in 1990 and would help get Atlanta to the World Series versus the Twins in 1991.

Random Wax: 1991 Fleer Baseball (4 Packs)

1991 Fleer:   Bo Jackson needs no introduction no matter where he goes.  When I think of him, I think about how much fun it was to watch him play whether it be in baseball, football or in commercials.

It is a gawdy set but one I really like.  Even if I have to wear sunglasses to properly enjoy it.  Really nice Mike Scioscia photo.

Who doesn't love Fleer's stickers and the backs?  Great large Red Sox logo sticker for me and on the back the all-time stat leaders in four categories.  Stats weren't that easily available back in the day so seeing things like this on cards was something I really love.

My Superstar Special pull.  We enjoy thinking of The Hawk as a Montreal Expo but the did play six season as a Cubbie.

I always liked Brett Butler and his speed as and the way Benito Santiago setup as a catcher when nobody was on base.

The backs are good with lots and lots of stats including the minor leagues and a headshot.

Really good Bert Blyleven photo.  He was born in Zeist, Nederlands and won two world championships with the '79 Pirates and the '87 Twins.

Fun pack of cards and so many good players including Luis Gonzalez who played his first full season with Houston in 1991.
