Random Wax: 2024 Prestige Football

2024 PrestigeAndre Tippett was a dominant linebacker in the 80s being inducted into the Hall of Fame while earning 2X All-Pro, 5X Pro-Bowl and All-1980s Team honors.  And the 1985 Defensive Player of the Year got to wear those cool Patriots unis.
Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars had a great season going 13-4 but lost a close Wild Card game to the Buffalo Bills that saw the teams combine for 28 points (14 each) in the 4th quarter.  And wow was it fun to watch.
Panini had last their college license by this point.  Xavier Legette and Adonai Mitchell have become productive receivers in the NFL.
Two nice inserts and two great players. I like both Prestigious Pros and Power House.
These two are Xtra Points parallels giving the cards a shiny aspect.  Malik Nabers has done well in New York and was a nice pull.  I look forward to see what John Harbaugh can do as the Giants' head coach.
We also get retired greats like Drew Brees on this For the Record insert.  Nice card.  Any given Sunday cards look really good while highlighting specific games from the season.
Could have started the post with A-A-Ron but we'll put him here.  I don't see why Pittsburgh thinks he's a good option to bring back.  No doubt he's one of the great passers we've ever seen, but I saw him many times last year and nothing said he was going to get Pittsburgh to the next level.  That said the Steelers are in purgatory, being good enough to not get a chance at a good QB in the draft but disappointing enough each season to leave their fans wanting more.

Random Wax: 2024 Prestige Football

2024 PrestigeRicky Williams was just being Ricky.  In the process he ran for 1,000+ yards 5X while leading the league in rushing with 1,853 yards with the Dolphins in 2002.  The Saints made one of the most infamous trades to draft him.

Traded by Redskins as 1999 1st round pick (5th overall) to Saints for 1999 1st round pick (12th overall subsequently traded, Cade McNown), 1999 3rd round pick (71st overall subsequently traded, D'Wayne Bates), 1999 4th round pick (107th overall, Nate Stimson), 1999 5th round pick (144th overall subsequently traded, Khari Samuel), 1999 6th round pick (179th overall subsequently traded, Desmond Clark), 1999 7th round pick (218th overall subsequently traded, Billy Miller), 2000 1st round pick (2nd overall, LaVar Arrington) and 2000 3rd round pick (64th overall, Lloyd Harrison)

Pretty good pull in this pack and I like the design.
Panini had lost their rights to college properties so air brushing was back in vogue.  Here we have a Sunburst Xtra Points Parallel.

All three of these are good.  I especially like Any Given Sunday.  But with no rights to college teams the Alma Mater insert doesn't hit the same.
I enjoy the retired greats in the set.
We end it with a really nice For the Record Jerry Rice.  Total receiving yards is just one of at least seven career records he holds.

2024 Prestige Football Blaster

2024 PrestigeDonovan McNabb was an excellent quarterback in the league for a long time.  He took the Eagles to the Conference Championship four times and to one Super Bowl.  Sure, Philly fans will always think they should have won a Super Bowl during that era, but it really was a good run for the Eagles.
I like the design this year.  Different from what were used to with Prestige lately, but it works for me.  It is missing the team logo.  You'll see the logo on the rookie cards but for some reason they are omitted here.  Plenty of room in the corners to add one and bummed they didn't do that.
A little different look for the rookie cards which I like.
Some inserts.  I like Alma Maters but Panini no longer has NCAA licenses so we don't see the alma mater's logo.  Still not sure about Time Stamped or Youth Movement but less questions about the latter.
Three of the Xtra Points inserts including a Green Parallel #/299.  I like these but I have gone back and forth on my opinion some.
I like For the Record.  Anything showing records, highlights, etc.  Prestigious Pros is an okay design.
Who doesn't love retired greats on new cardboard?
The backs are fine.  Nothing special but plenty of color and the basics.
I'll probably pick up more of this.  I like the look and want to see more.

Random Wax: 2022 Prestige Football

2022 PrestigeTom Terrific knows a little bit about playoffs and conference championship games.  Just saying.
Myles Garrett is still one of the most dominant players on the defensive side of the ball.  Stefon Diggs is a great receiver but this season seemed to show a rift between him and the team or Josh Allen.
Aidan Hutchinson has lived up to the hype of being the 2nd overall pick.
Garrett on a Franchise Favorites insert.  Some offensive line love on that Prestigeous insert.  And a Power House card to round it out.  I'm good with the designs on all three of these.
Some retired greats and an Xtra Points Parallel.  Theismann and the Redskins are playing the Raiders there.  Super Bowl photo I assume which I like.
Overall not a design I care for but still a fun pull.  Nice Time Stamped Aaron Rogers card to end it.

2022 Prestige Football

2022 Prestige Football:  Plenty of this on the shelf so why not pick it up?  Stefon Diggs will be a big part of any success the Buffalo Bills have this season.  It starts tonight against the Rams.  I think Buffalo wins it and would enjoy seeing some big plays from this guy.
Not my favorite Prestige design but much better than last year's disaster.  This could have really worked had they muted that white a bit more.  Overall, a good pack which had plenty of star power.
Some of the rookies hoping to have good years.  That Wydermyer is a Xtra Points parallel.
Only a few inserts which is disappointing.  I do like these though.  Heroes is fun while Time Stamped showcases a specific moment.  Prestigious Pros has a good look to it.
I think of Christmas and New Years when I think of Seasons Greetings but I'm not feeling holidays with this design.  Not sure what they were trying to convey with the name of this insert.
The backs are fine.  Standard fair. We get some good color.  The photo could have been smaller and they could have added a season or two of extra stats to help out but that is something we always wish for.
The base set is a meaty 400 cards, up from 300 last year.  The price for this 60 card pack?  $15.98.  Prestige is just too expensive.  I feel like a broken record because I say it every year.  Not sure why they are so pricey.  it doesn't come across in the cards themselves.  Why is this set more expensive than a set like, say, Donruss?
Price point issues aside, this was a fun pack.  I like getting 60 cards in a pack.  Just felt good in hand and I couldn't resist picking up something with the first game of the season tonight.  We'll end it with stud running back Jonathan Taylor of the Colts.
Go Bills!

Random Wax: 2020 Prestige Foootball

2020 Prestige Football: My Bills will hope to upset the Chiefs today.  I think they have a good chance but only if their offense is clicking on all cylinders.  I think the defense will be solid.  Not saying they'll stop Mahomes and that offense but I think they'll represent well.  We'll start this one off with Dak Prescott who was upset in the Wild Card round by the 49ers.  The offense really disappointed.  I'm curious if there'll be any major changes with Dallas in the offseason.
Not a bad pull but I feel it could have been stronger.  Julio Jones made the playoffs thanks to the trade that sent him to the Titans.  Was sorry to see him go but hopefully he'll do well.
Obwuegbunam had a solid second season while Patrick Queen has started all 33 games of his career with the Ravens.
This dude will be a big part of any chance the Rams have of stopping the Buccaneers this weekend.
Campbell is in the twilight of his career but still had some great years in his career.  Old School is always fun as we get to see some retired greats.
Fitz is a favorite of mine so I'm always happy to pull him.  Derek Carr didn't win last week but did have another good year.  OBJ will be catching passes this weekend for the Rams.  Fun pack.  Design isn't bad sans no team logo on the verteran player cards but I've seen worse. Go Bills!

2021 Prestige Football

2021 Prestige Football: Found these on the shelves recently so I grabbed a couple of packs.  Really hoping Christian McCaffrey can came back from injuries.  He's so good.
The design itself is similar to what we've seen in the past from Prestige.  What is different is that white space.  The scans don't look bad but in hand it's very annoying.  The lettering on top of it is silver foil which doesn't help.
Rookies get their time to shine. The Williams is an Xtra Points parallel.
The Nick Chubb is an Xtra Points parallel while the Sweat card is a XTRA Points Red Parallel #/299.  The backs also have a lot of white to them.  Just distracting and makes the cards unappealing.
The inserts aren't bad.  After all the white on the base cards it's nice not to be blinded. But really I do like these.  The Any Given Sunday are my favorite but the Heroes card has a good vibe to it.
I doubt I'll pick more of these up.  They are usually a good low end option for football cards though.  I could me making an impulse buy sometime...and probably regret it upon opening the pack.  Enjoy the first full day of games!
