Random Wax: 1990-1991 SkyBox Basketball (3 Packs)

91-92 SkyBox:  It feels easy to forget how great and how dominant Karl Malone was for so long.  He was 14X All-NBA (5th all-time), 3rd in points all-time and was All-Defensive Team 4X.  And a 2X MVP and All-75th Anniversary Team selection.  Averaged 25 and 10 over a 19-year career.  Don't sleep on the greatness that was Karl Malone.

Great pull in these packs.  As always, I could do these packs all day.  I love this era and this set.

Jeff Hornacek shot 42% from deep in his 7 seasons with the Jazz.

The backs are always fun.  Love the smile from Byron Scott.  Scott shot 37% from three on his career leading the league once with 43%.

Some big man love.

The graphics on the basketball are subtle but help make the fronts of these so much fun.

Johnny Moore once led the league in assists and averaged over 9 assists per game in 5 seasons.  That included 10 in 1984-1985.  He averaged 7 assists and 2 steals for his career.  More great cards.  More great players.  More fun.

Random Wax: 1990-1991 SkyBox Basketball (3 Packs)

90-91 SkyBox:  I've been sharing these three packs at a time for a year and a half, and I finally get to feature the GOAT with the first card.  MJ is the best player I've ever seen play.  He had an intesity to him I've rarely seen in other players.  As great as he was on offense, you didn't want him guarding you because he was just as good on defense.  And he was so freaking smart.  Words don't do him justice in my mind.  Random fact:  In his final season, at age 39, he averaged 20 points per game and played all 82 games.

My all-time favorite player, Dominique.  It was always fun watching him go up against Jordan, but he and the Hawks almost always fell short.  Doesn't diminish the fun it was to watch (in retrospect).  And we have a couple of great shooters in Drazen Petrovic (RIP) and Reggie.

In my mind, Xavier McDaniel was a power forward but he played small forward for the vast majority of his career.  He played big averaging 15 PPG and 6 RPG for his 12-year career,

We love the backs.  Another Reggie in Reggie Theus, my 3rd all-time favorite player.  He had a strong jheri curl game more than appropriate for the time.

Some solid players from back in the day.  Rod Strickland was All-NBA 1X but never made an all-star team.  The 2025-2026 NBA season starts in one week.

Plenty of great guards here.  Lever was a do it all guard who four times in his career averaged 8+ rebounds per game (two of those he averaged over 9 per game).  Ricky Pierce was an all-around guard who was named 6th Man of the Year 2X and was a 1X All-Star selection.  These are always so much fun!

90-91 SkyBox:  I think Reggie Miller could play in any era.  Yes his shooting would play today, but his drive and grit would work on any court during any time.

What a pull in these packs.  These three were all great in their own ways.  But all were dynamic.  All three are also all-time favorites of mine.

Mark Aguirre was a big part of the Pistons' championships in the late eighties/early nineties.  He was passed his prime when he was traded for Adrian Dantley, but he was a perfect fit with Detroit.

The backs are great.  Yep more stats would be better but I'll still not complain.

Some good guards of the era.  Tucker is the lesser known but an excellent shooter.  Probably been a Kyle Korver type in today's game.  Spot up shooter that didn't really find his own shot much.

Walter Davis was just smooth.  John Stockton needs no introduction.  He owns a good chunk of the assist section of the record book.  He was a quintessential point guard.  There'll never be another one like him.  It was great watching him run the Jazz offense.

90-91 SkyBox:  Charles Barkley was the Round Mound of Rebound long before he was the analyst we've grown to love and hate.  I do really enjoy Chuck as an analyst.  He's honest, goofy, fun and sometimes talks out of place and I enjoy it all.

I like all three of these photos.  Nate McMillen was scaring players with this dunk.  Maybe that is A.C. Green of the Lakers below him?  Great battle under the boards from two of the best big men of the era in Charles Oakley and Buck Williams.

Man these backs are great.  And it's all about the photos.  Did Chuck and Tom Chambers go to their local Glamour Shots studio for these photos?

Tom Chambers really was a good big man.  Very athletic, good hands and a nice mid-range shot.  Maybe defense wasn't his thing, but he was fun to watch.

Hall of Famer Alex English was an amazing scorer.  He could do it inside as well as with that sweet jump shot shown off below.  I'm a big fan.  He averaged 21.5 points per game for his career even though he wasn't starting games until his third year in the league.  His scoring run from 1981 to 1989 was amazing.

90-91 SkyBox:  I did not like this dude when he was playing, and kicking my team's butt, but I've become a big Larry Bird fan over the years.  He was a competitor to the nth degree, and wow could he play.  His passing and shooting would so work in today's NBA.

Shawn Kemp shooting, Mitch Richmond playing defense, and Mark Eaton passing.  Not the typical actions we think of when we think of these three.

Some big man love.  I've always been a Ralph Sampson fan. When I go back and look at his highlights, I wonder ever more "what if he hadn't gotten injured?".

The backs of these cards are great.  Bird looking ticked he's not in the game, the Mark Eaton glamor shot and the big Ralph Sampson smile.  All so much fun.

Bad boys, bad boys, what ya gonna do?

Bird making another appearance on the Dale Ellis card.  I love Dale Ellis but defense wasn't his thing, so you know that Bird loved those matchups.

Random Wax: 1990-1991 SkyBox Basketball (3 Packs)

90-91 SkyBox:  Kevin Johnson was one of the best floor generals of the late 80s and 90s.  He was a 3X All-Star and 5X All-NBA selection.  He was also the mayor of Sacramento for two terms (8 yrs).

Derek Harper was another really good point guard and an excellent defender. 

I always enjoy showing off cards from this set.  I bought this box early last year and been showing them off slowly over time.  "Sleepy" Floyd scored 51 points against the Los Angeles Lakers in game 4 of the 1987 Western Conference Semifinals, 29 in the 4th quarter.

More really good guards from the era and one all-time great.  DJ won three NBA Championships with Seattle and Boston and was a 9X All-Defensive team selection.  I love this set and all the memories of watching these guys play back in the day.

Random Wax: 1990-1991 SkyBox Basketball (3 Packs)

90-91 SkyBox:  Due to his Navy service David Robinson didn't start play in the NBA until age 24 but man he didn't disappoint once he got on the court.  He was nothing less than an amazing player and could do it all.  Defense.  Score.  Pass the ball.  I almost got to see him play during the 96-97 season but he was injured that year.  That was also the season Pop took over as coach.  

These are some of my favorites from the era.  All three were great players with Walter Davis being elected to the Hall of Fame. 

Such a great set that thought outside the box.  Very colorful with such a unique design.

The backs were great too for the second photo which many times saw the players away from the court.

Three excellent scorers from the time.   They all did it differently but were all fun to watch.  Their best seasons scoring were 22, 29, and 26 points per game respectively.  

Some point guard excellence and of course the GOAT to end it.  Great photo and card of Michael Jordan.

90-91 SkyBox:  Nique is my favorite all-time player from the NBA.  Here he's also in an all-time great uni.  I might be biased.

K.J. isn't in the Hall of Fame but man was he good.  DJ is in the Hall and was such a great all-around guard.

Some favorites of mine from the era.  Jeff Hornacek was such a great three-point shooter and his career 40% from deep would definitely play well today.  He wasn't an outstanding defender but was good enough.  Johnny Moore and Alvin Robertson were excellent point guards and defenders back in the day.  Robertson was more of a scorer and was more highly decorated, and deservedly so, but don't sleep on Johnny Moore.

We didn't get stat totals but averages which was a huge win on the backs.  Photos are first rate as well.

I'm a big A.D. guy.  It was fun watching him score and he was a great from the era.  We all remember him being traded by the Pistons for Mark Aguirre and Detroit going on to win two NBA Championships.  But earlier in his career he was traded by the Laker to the Utah Jazz in 1979.  LA won the 1980 NBA Championship.  It wasn't because of that trade, but the poor guy missed out on multiple championships in his career.

Such great memories.  I could go on and on about these players.  Fun cards.
