2019-2020 Portland Trail Blazers Season Preview

Portland won 53 games last year in route to their Conference Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors.  It was a really good year though the broken leg Jusuf Nurkic sustained during the season was a big loss.  He isn’t expected to return until February and veteran Hassan Whiteside will be expected to fill the void until he returns.  He’s a double double guy who should be a decent place holder but isn’t as dynamic as Nurkic.  Portland of course has one of the top backcourts in Damian Lillard (25ppg/6apg) and CJ McCollum (21ppg/3apg) and that’s a lot to be happy about.  They’ll again be called upon to carry this team.  They are both on long term contracts and have shown they are up to the task.

As it seems every year it seems like the front court will be the big question.  Gone are Al-Farouq Aminu and Maurice Harkless who weren’t exciting players but they were a known quantity.  I think that means Rodney Hood now moves to SF and Zach Collins will be the starting PF.  My biggest concerns are their defense and how they’ll match up.  The loss of Seth Curry and his three point shooting will really be missed as well.  Like many Trail Blazer fans I wonder if we’ll get more Anfernee Simmons this year.  He has shown some brilliance in short spurts and has us all wondering if he could be a good if not great option on offense long term.  A natural SG it would seem his path is mostly blocked but maybe he sees more time at SF.  This team begins and ends with Lillard and McCollom.  Can they take it to the next level is the question.  I’m concerned with the supporting roster not being where any fan would like it to be.  I still pencil them in for 50+ wins and with all the changes in the West that will be a good place to be.

2019-2020 Atlanta Hawks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks, while only winning 29 games last year, are an exciting team with young stars Trae Young (19ppg/8apg) and John Collins (19ppg/9rpg).  In the draft they loaded up with even more young talent with De’Andre Hunter (Virginia) and Cam Reddish (Duke).  This team probably isn’t going to make the playoffs this year but this is all about developing the young players and being a contender for what hopefully will be a long time.

Depth will also be an issue with this team as there isn’t much of a bench.  I wish they had been able to keep Dewayne Dedmon who had developed into a good stretch center but he signed as a free agent with the Kings.  Less veterans will mean more playing time for the new guys but it will also lead to growing pains if they struggle.  I like coach Lloyd Pierce and I hope he can develop these guys into that core the fans have been waiting for.  It should be a fun season albeit not with a ton of wins.  If they can get to 35 wins I think it is a good season.

2019 Unparalleled Football

2019 Unparalleled Football:  I'd looked this up before buying a pack and figured these really weren't up my ally but the wife offered to pick up a pack and who am I to say no?  I was right.  I'm not a shiny guy and these just don't seem to work for football.  Also the fact that you only get 20 for $5.49 is a drawback.  I'm sure these will work for some folks but they just aren't my cup of tea.
The backs are the one positive I take from theses.  Nice color photo with a background which is the one from the front.  Not saying it is great but one of the better ones I've seen this year.  The In The Moment isn't a bad looking card.
I was happy with my pull.  This set has 300 base cards so pulling the star power I did seemed like a win.
Cards 201-300 are Rookies cards.  So these are more along the lines of a subset I guess as opposed to an insert.  I assume they all go horizontal since both that I pulled were.

I believe this to be a sunburst parallel.  Think more shiny.

Random Wax: 2019 Topps Baseball

2019 Topps Baseball:  We have more American League Championship Series action tonight thanks to the rain out Wednesday so now is as good as any to look at some 2019 Topps baseball.  Khris Davis is an easy pick to lead this off with.  He is a PC guy for me and this is a good photo of him. It's also my first time pulling him this year though I do think I have his Opening Day card.  Davis struggled this year and had to deal with injuries but the true tragedy of his season is that he had a shot at hitting .247 for the fifth season in a row but was unable to do so.  You heard it right - he hit .247 in the four seasons prior to this year.
Some more Davis love in the form of his League Leaders card for leading the league with 48 homeruns.
The back of the Kenesaw Mountain Landis Revolution of the Game card.  Dude not only had a great name but also oversaw some major times in MLB history.
A couple greats in Arenado and Betts go horizontal on these cards.  I needed both of these as well.
I liked this year's design and the Topps baseball flagship is always fun to pick up.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and the Braves fell short against the Cardinals but we know this team is young and talented and with some real pitching it could be even better in years to come.

The Houses October Built 2 Movie Review (Spoilers for Original Movie)

The Houses October Built 2:  This review can spoil aspects of the first movie which I looked at earlier today.  As a big fan of the original I had to see this one and finally got the chance last night.  As much as I like the original this one fell flat.  It brings back the original group of friends to go on a quieter less crazy tour of haunted houses.  Again things go wrong and creepy.  Really though this one just doesn't have the creepiness to it the first one did.  Seems like a lot of slower build up which doesn't pay off.  The movie is fairly predictable but there is a twist at the end but it wasn't set up that well and I could see it coming.  And I'm not real good at figuring these things out.  I guess it just suffers from sequelitis.  I probably won't watch this one again like I do the original every year unless someone who hasn't seen it turns it on.

The Houses October Built Movie Review

The Houses October Built:  Mondays are usually scary so I thought a couple of scary movies today would be appropriate.  This is one of my favorites.  A group of five friends go on a trip to find the ultimate haunt.  That trip takes some really creepy twists and turns and ends poorly for the adventurists.  I really do like this movie and I'm surprised I hadn't posted a review in a previous October.  To me it was fun watching the group go to each haunted house as the weirdness gets ramped up.  The trailer can be seen here.  My next post will be about the 2017 sequel.

Random Wax: 2019 Score Football

Back to my favorite football set of the year with more 2019 Score football.  The great throwback design and the variety with the  inserts keeps me coming back.  I like these Captains inserts and Georgia Bulldog alum Todd Gurley makes it that much better.  Especially with the classic Rams unis.
Again this set has plenty of variety intheir inserts.  I like all three of these.  Fun seeing the Falcons in their old unis though I much prefer the GOAT red Falcons jerseys and helmets.
The youngsters are represented of course and it looks like Jared Goff might be ready to execute a finger roll?  I can't believe he's athletic enough to dunk it over the goal post.
Julio leading a great trio of receivers though Antonio Brown may fall into the "former" category now.
That signal callers is shiny so it doesn't scan very well.  Back to the basketball theme with Tyler Lockett doing a nice fadeaway over some nice defense.
That's a great Vander Esch photo.
These'll be a go to for quite a while I think.  They speak to me.  Mostly "buy more".
